Brief History

The Thakral family started a small retail business in Textiles in 1905 in Bangkok under the name of ‘Punjab Store’.  In 1936, a branch with the name S S Amarnath was opened in Japan. The operations in Bangkok and Japan were in those times confined mainly to the Textile business.  In 1952 an office in Singapore was opened under the name of Thakral Brothers.   The business was subsequently converted into a private limited company in 1973.

The Thakral Group diversified into Electronics in 1974.  The trading in Electronics grew very rapidly and , to keep up with this, a separate division, Thakral Emporium (S) Pte Ltd, was started in Singapore in 1975.

Over the past decade, the volume of International trade handled by the Group in Electronics, Textiles and other products has expanded tremendously.  Imports and Exports now cover almost all the principal centres of the World.  The success of the Group lies in its ability to understand the needs and wants of the market, and its skill in reacting rapidly to satisfy those needs and wants.  To ensure that this level of service is maintained, the Group employs outstanding professionals, who maintain close business relationships with their customers.

From a modest beginnings as a Textile trader, the Thakral Group has grown to become a major international trader.  Thakral Group  today is one of Singapore’s largest homegrown conglomerates with operation spanning more than 23 countries and employing over 10,000 people worldwide.   Thakral Group international network of trading offices allow closer reach to the end market.
