THE THAKRAL GROUP
The Thakral Group had its beginnings in a small retail business since 1905, the ‘Punjab Store’ in Bangkok.
The Thakral Group has enjoyed enormous growth since 1905 and today its operations span more than 23 countries. The Thakral family started a small retail business in Textiles in 1905 in Bangkok under the name of ‘Punjab Store’. The Thakral’s enterprising spirit led them to Japan in 1936, where they continued to focus on the family’s core business – Textiles. Later, the Group ventured into several other countries, including Singapore and China in the 1950s and 1960s. At a time when the strategy of regionalization was still in planning stage for most companies, the Thakral family had already made inroads into foreign lands, which would later pave the way for the Group’s growth and diversification.
While Thakral’s roots were in Textiles and Trading, the Group has since forayed into Electronics distribution, Real-estate, Hotel establishments, Manufacturing, IT and value-added consulting services. Today, the Thakral Group is also providing IT products, services and support in most emerging markets as well as in Europe and US.
A leading businessman of Singapore, Mr. Kartar Singh Thakral has been awarded the Singapore Businessman of the year 1995.
He is a member of the Nomination Committee of the Company and the Chairman of the Thakral Family Companies.
He is also the Joint Chairman of Thakral Holdings Limited, a company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange from March 1994 to October 2012.
Appointed by the Minister for Trade and Industry as the director of the Singapore Trade Development Board for a period of four years ending 1998, Mr Kartar Singh was also a member of the Committee to Promote Enterprise Overseas and a member of the Regional Business Forum, both appointed by the Singapore Government.
He is a trustee of the Singapore Sikh Education Foundation and Sri Guru Nanak Sat Sang Sabha and was a trustee of Singapore Indian Development Association from 1991 till 31 December 2006.
